Edward McDonough Inducted 1989 Elgin High School Class of 1907 Biography McDonough was one of the few Elginites to attain the heights of big league fame. After his graduation from Elgin High School, he entered Notre Dame University where he starred on the 1908 and 1909 teams as a catcher. He played on their National College Championship Team (won 29 and lost 1). Known for his defensive ability, Ed fielded .971 and .990 during his two college seasons while hitting .279 and .303. In 1909 he went directly to the Philadelphia Athletics of the National League where he played for three years. He then played for Scranton, Pa. in the New York State League and in the Southern League. He distinguished himself from 1912 to 1915 as player-manager of the the Albany and Utica teams in the New York State circuit before retiring from the game and returning to Elgin. |
