Dave
St. John played on one of the first organized and sponsored youth baseball
teams as a 12/13 year old before Little League was established in Elgin. Dave played catcher for Elgin High and for
Elgin VFW in semi-pro ball. While in the
army, he played on the European Army baseball team in Weisbaden, Germany. In addition, Dave was invited to umpire in
the European Little League World Series Tournament. In 1963, he became Commissioner of Illinois
State Semi-Pro Baseball Tourney sponsored by the Elgin Jaycees. Dave then coached little league and umpired
all levels of baseball in Elgin
for 20 years. He also served as
president of Classic Little League and player agent for Continental Little
League and the Teener League. Dave has coached PeeWee
football in Elgin
and has always been interested in and supportive of high school sports,
attending most basketball, football, and baseball games, including
tournaments. He is a member of the
Larkin High Booster Club, for which he has served as treasurer. In 2005, Dave was selected and inducted into
the Illinois Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame as a Friend of High School Basketball. Since 1953, he has attended Illinois High School
basketball tournaments and continues his passion for high school sports since
his retirement from Elgin Sweeper Company.
